BookBuilders West Book Show 2008 Call for Entries
Eligibility | Entry Fees | Submitting an Entry | Judging Criteria | Categories

Come share your work with fellow book professionals at the 38th Annual Bookbuilders West Book Show!

Enter the best interior designs, covers, jackets, and product catalogs from your 2007–2008 season in our Book Show competition. Your work will be showcased at our gala banquet in front of hundreds of book designers, publishers, and printers as well as our distinguished panel of judges. And who knows? You may take home a prize.

Bookbuilders West was founded in 1969 in San Francisco as a nonprofit professional association supporting book publishing in the 13 Western states. Members and non-members mingle at BBW meetings, learn the latest innovations in book publishing from our discussion panels and keynote speakers, and enjoy educational seminars and social activities—all geared toward books and book production.

BBW’s year culminates in the annual Bookbuilders West Book Show, one of the largest and most prestigious shows of its kind in the U.S. All entered books are elegantly displayed for our banquet guests to view before the show, followed by lunch, entertainment, and the main event.

The 38th Annual Book Show promises to be bigger and better than ever. We hope you’ll join us in our annual celebration of the book by sending in your work. If you have questions or comments or are interested in hosting an exhibit of the award-winning entries during the traveling book show, please contact us at bookshow@bookbuilders.org.

ELIGIBILITY

Entries may be submitted by any publisher or any supplier engaged in designing, manufacturing, or publishing books in any of the Western states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, or Wyoming. Entries need not be manufactured exclusively in the Western states, nor is membership in Bookbuilders West required. If you submit entries but are not a member of Bookbuilders West, be sure to sign up for email announcements on the website (www.bookbuilders.org) to keep apprised of the book show and other events.

Books must have a 2007 or later copyright date and must have been published by an eligible publisher or manufactured wholly or in part by an eligible supplier. Any number of titles not previously entered from the 2007–2008 publishing period may be submitted.

ENTRY FEES

One to five book entries: $45.00 per entry
Six or more book entries: $40.00 per entry
Cover, catalog, or jacket entry: $40.00 per entry
Non-members, please add an additional $5 to the per-entry prices noted above.

SUBMITTING AN ENTRY

There are three steps in submitting an entry:

(1) Fill out the online entry form, and carefully check your email’s copy.

(2) Print four copies of the completed entry form.

(3) Send one package, to the address shown below, containing: (1) each entry and four copies of its entry form, (2) pay Bookbuilders West via the online credit card system on the website for the entire entry fee, and (3) this year we have an FTP site for you to upload press-quality PDFs of the front cover and several representative page spreads, or you can send a CD containing press-quality PDFs of the front cover and several representative page spreads. If your book is selected as an award winner, the supplied PDFs will be used in catalog image presentation. Label each CD with the book title, publisher, and ISBN, and enclose it with the entry forms. Each title must have its own properly labeled CD. If you are downloading to the FTP site, please note the file name on your entry forms. By submitting PDFs with entries, the prepress time and expense incurred by Bookbuilders volunteers is reduced. See Sending a Book and Sending a Cover or Jacket for more specifics on packaging each type of entry.

All entries must be received no later than June 27, 2008. Send to:

BBW Book Show Entry

Important!
• Non-complying entries may be disqualified.
• If the judges feel that an entry has been submitted in an inappropriate category, they will reassign the entry prior to judging.
• Late entries and titles not accepted will be returned with the entry fee.
• All materials including books, covers, and jackets accepted for competition in the Book Show will not be returned.

If the same book, cover, or jacket is submitted by more than one entrant, the publisher’s entry will be accepted and any others will be returned with the fees. If the publisher is not among the entrants, the first entry received for that book, cover, or jacket will be the official entry and all others will be returned with the fees.

For multiple entries from a company or an individual, a single payment for the total amount is preferred. Regardless of the number of entries, all entries from a publisher or an individual must be packaged and sent as a group.

Sending a Book OR Catalog
When sending a book or catalog, each must be accompanied by: (1) four copies of the completed entry form, (2) two uncut copies of the book (one for judging, one for display), (3) the entry fee, and (4) this year you can download press-quality PDFs of the front cover and several representative page spreads or send a CD containing press-quality PDFs of the front cover and several representative page spreads (see the section on Submitting an Entry for details). Please pay via the credit card system on the website. Tuck all four completed forms inside the front cover of one of the books along with the properly labelled CDs of the PDF images.

Sending a Cover or Jacket
When sending a cover or jacket without its book, each cover or jacket must be accompanied by: (1) four copies of the completed entry form, (2) one mounted cover or jacket, (3) one unmounted, flat cover or jacket, (4) the entry fee, and (5) this year you can upload to the FTP site or send a CD containing a high-resolution PDF file of the cover or jacket. Cover and jacket entries must show the complete front, spine, back, and flaps. Partial covers will be disqualified. Each mounted cover or jacket must be permanently mounted, entirely flat on Fome-cor with one-inch open margins on all sides regardless of the size of the cover or jacket. A completed entry form must be taped to the back. Attach the check or money order and the properly labelled CD of high-resolution PDF images to one of the other three entry forms and send with the covers or jackets. Without a mounted cover or jacket, the entry will not be accepted and will not be returned.

JUDGING CRITERIA

Each entry will be judged on its own merits—regardless of category—and evaluated for its excellence. Entries are judged individually, not against other books. There is only one level of award, but in a typical year 15 percent of the entries receive awards.

Judges for the categories are selected for their knowledge and experience in those segments. Entrants may receive ballots containing judges’ comments following the Book Show banquet. The judges will examine and evaluate entries with respect to the following classifications:

DESIGN - Is the style and size of type appropriate for the intended market? Is the arrangement of type and graphics effective and functional? Are graphic elements creatively planned, purposeful, and well executed? Is the use of color effective and appropriate? Were budget constraints an issue? Have the inserts, cover, jacket, endpapers, and other components been designed to complement and enrich the book as a whole? Does the design help the reader understand the author’s intent?

PRODUCTION - Does typesetting and page makeup demonstrate high standards and well-recognized practices of the bookmaking craft? Do illustrations and photographic images have good tonal range between shadows and highlights? Is detail held in highlight and shadow areas?

MANUFACTURING - Is the printing well executed with respect to inking, register, and image clarity? Has suitable paper been used? Are margins consistent and page backup accurate? Is the printing of component elements such as cover, jacket, inserts, and endpapers, consistent with the quality of the text printing? Is the book bound according to the best practices of bindery craftsmanship?

CATEGORIES

To ensure that entries are evaluated with the appropriate criteria in mind, eight main categories (and subcategories) have been established to recognize the intended use of the book, as well as the demands, constraints, challenges, and opportunities that exist in each category.

The categories for submission of covers and jackets are the same as those for books. Covers and jackets may be submitted for consideration without entering the accompanying books.

CHILDREN’S TRADE
This category includes books varying in subject matter and created specifically for the enjoyment and enrichment of a juvenile or young audience.

PROFESSIONAL TRADE
This category includes books designed for business or professional development that are intended for individual use. These books provide general guidance to the working professional or teach specific technical or professional skills by presenting material as commentary and explication (such as computer books or legal guides). Books in this category are often packaged with CDs or other media.

REFERENCE AND SCHOLARLY
This category includes highly specialized texts of primary interest to an academic or research readership, and also reference works for a general audience that are intended to be consulted rather than read continuously. These books can vary from encyclopedic resources, desk references, and dictionaries to collections of professor’s writings and other scholarly works. They are primarily text driven but may contain graphics and illustrations.

SCHOOL PUBLISHING
Books in this category are intended for classroom use at the elementary through post-graduate level, including student and instructor editions and ancillary components physically attached to the principal print product. Also included are books targeted for adult continuing education and vocational training that are intended for a hands-on, classroom-like environment.
The two subcategories include:
• Elementary and High School
• College

SPECIAL TRADE
Books in this category do not fit comfortably into the other trade and reference categories. These can include specialized genres such as novelty books, cookbooks, gift books, health and fitness books, travel books, or field guides that utilize a creative or decorative design, illustrations, photography, and packaging to illustrate the content of the book.

TRADE, IMAGE DRIVEN
This category includes books of general interest that are designed to maximize their illustrative appeal. These books are published primarily for their visual content, which consists of photographs, illustrations, or other graphics. Books in this category include, but are not limited to, photographic essays and fine art editions, museum guides, and historical picture books. There are no subcategories.

TRADE, TEXT DRIVEN
This category includes books of general interest that are published primarily for their text content. Photographs, illustrations, or other graphics serve as an accessory to the text. Books in this category include, but are not limited to, fiction, nonfiction, prose, and poetry. There are no subcategories.

PRODUCT CATALOG
Annual, semi-annual, or quarterly printed catalog used to promote product book product line. The catalog must be bound mechanically (saddle stitch, perfectbinding) and be reproduced using standard offset lithography or digital printing (iGen, Indigo, DocuTech) methods. There are no limitations on dimensions or types of materials that can be used.
